I think most people who use higher end makeup or skincare have heard of Josie Maran. Her 100% Pure Argan Oil was an all-around game changer, challenging many of the assumptions we had about the use of oils on the face.
Josie Maran makeup, for me at least, is a little out of sight out of mind. I've only seen it in store at Sephora, and the actual makeup is lumped in with the Josie Maran skincare line. While I'm sure there's a good reason for this, maybe because the range is so small or the brand is trying to signal that the makeup is good for your skin, I'm not sure that that placement is doing the brand any favors.
The Josie Maran Cosmetics website states that "Josie Maran Cosmetics is dedicated to enhancing the natural beauty of our customers, and the natural beauty of the earth." They call themselves 'Luxury with a Conscience" and source all of their Argan Oil from all female cooperatives in Morocco, which are dedicated to responsible harvesting practices and reforestation projects. The brand markets itself similarly to a green beauty or ecobeauty brand, but it's important to note that although their Argan Oil ingredient is 100% pure and natural, they're line does use synthetic ingredients in a number of its products.
Josie Maran Argan Creamy Concealer | Price: $20 | Shade: Dark 1 | Amount: 0.1 ounce | Not Vegan | Not 100% Natural
Like pretty much all concealers, this claims to cover without caking, creasing, or fading. The caking claim is true, but on me it does crease if not set with powder and fades over time. Since it's hydrating, in very convenient packaging, and the color Dark 1 is a good match to the lighter parts of my face, I use this as a travel complexion product that I can quickly smooth on as needed.
Josie Maran Argan Enlightenment Illuminator | Price: $26 | Shade: N/A | Amount: 0.5 fluid ounces | Vegan | Not 100% Natural
This is a liquid illuminator that claims to mimic the natural radiance of the skin. I disagree. At least on my skin tone and skin type, this illuminator is ashy, chunky, and sets too quickly to blend properly. It's easily the least favorite product I tried.
Josie Maran Argan Black Oil Mascara | Price: $22 | Shade: N/A | Amount: 0.27 fluid ounces | Not Vegan | 91% Natural
This is a great (mostly) natural mascara and gives much more dramatic results than my rms beauty Volumizing Mascara. It's the blackest black, the perfect finish between shiny and matte, and builds easily. There are claims that users experience healthier lashes - I haven't seen this, but I also do not use it consistently.
Josie Maran Argan Infinity Lip and Cheek Creamy Oil | Price: $8 (sale) | Shade: Endless Guava | Amount: 0.5 fluid ounces | Not Vegan | Not 100% Natural
Since I purchased this lip oil, it has consistently resided in my purse. The Endless Guava color is a pretty warm pink shade that is bright but not distracting. 90% of time I just use it on my lips, but if I'm going for a no makeup makeup look I also like to spread it over my cheeks. I was pleasantly surprised by how much color actually sows up on my skin tone.
As usual, I started this look with my eyebrows done. You can learn more about my natural eyebrow routine here.
Before I start I want to mention that before I apply beach makeup I always, always apply sunscreen. My sunscreen of choice for heavy duty beach days is the Josie Maran Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 47. I use the un-tinted version. If I rub it in well it does not give me any white cast and although the formula is very emollient, it's nothing that a little powder can't fix, doesn't make me oiler than usual, and most importantly, doesn't break me out.
Step 1: Apply concealer to even out complexion and cover redness or dark circles.
Step 2: Apply liquid illuminator to high points of the face (tops of cheeks, nose bridge, cupid's bow).
Step 3: Also place illuminator to the inner corners and centers of the eyes to brighten.
Step 4: Use a few coats of mascara to thicken lashes and define the eyes.
Step 5: Add glossy color and hydration to the lips with a bright pink lip oil.
Step 6: Smooth the same lip oil on the cheeks to add some natural rosiness.
