A few weeks ago I wrote a review on the Herbivore Botanicals Charcoal Cleansing Bar Soap and Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist. (You can find that review here.) After I cleanse and tone using those products I hydrate and treat with the Phoenix Facial Oil and the Moon Fruit Night Treatment, reviewed below.
Phoenix Facial Oil
Availability: Nordstrom, Sephora, Herbivore
Size: 1.7 ounces (also comes in a travel-sized roller ball)
Ingredients: Jojoba Seed Oil, Rosehip Seed Oil, Meadowfoam Seed Oil, Chia Seed Oil, CoQ10, Sea Buckthorn Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Moroccan Rose Absolute, Neroli Essential Oil
Like all Herbivore Botanical products, every ingredient serves a purpose. The Phoenix Facial Oil is designed to refresh and rejuvenate the skin. Rosehip Oil delivers Omega fatty acids that help repair and regenerate cells. CoQ10 increases the skin's collagen levels, and hence elasticity. Chia seed oil calms inflammation and boosts radiance. Jojoba oil, which closely mimics our skin's natural sebum, is used as the carrier for these carefully selected ingredients. Herbivore Botanicals currently makes thee facial oils. Lapis, a bright blue oil is designed for oily or combination skin types, and Orchid, a pale yellow, is a great intro oil for those with normal skin types.
I have sensitive skin that is often dull and slightly sallow. I'm am typically normal to combination; my cheeks and forehead are normal, sometime slightly dry, but my nose can get pretty oily. Now that I'm 29, I focus my skincare routine on hydration and anti-aging (which is why I set my sights on this particular product). I use this oil twice a day and depending on how much hydration I'm looking for, I will press between 3 and 5 drops onto my face and neck.
This is a great second-time facial oil. If you're new to facial oils and started off with something at a lower price point, like the Josie Maran or the Fresh Seaberry, you may be looking for an upgrade. That's where this type of oil comes through. You also may be tempted to use a pure oil of some sort, like Argan or Jojoba. Although this can be an economical way to hydrate and protect the skin, you'll be missing out on the benefits of custom oil blends such as this one.
Moon Fruit Night Treatment
Availability: Sephora, Herbivore
Size: 1.7 ounces
Ingredients: Organic Aloe Leaf Juice, Red Raspberry Seed Oil, Organic Prickly Pear Oil, Kokum Butter, Organic Shea Butter, Cetearyl Glucoside, Cetearyl Alcohol, Organic Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Organic Rosehip Seed Oil, Hyaluronic Acid, Organic Ylang Ylang Flower Oil, Organic Bilberry Fruit Extract, Organic Sugar Cane Extract, Organic Sugar Maple Extract, Organic Orange Peel Extract, Organic Lemon Peel Extract, Organic Cranberry Fruit Extract, Organic Papaya Fruit Extract, Organic Goji Berry Extract, Xanthan Gum, Indigo Powder, Ultramarine Blue, Manganese Violet
This is probably the prettiest, most Instagram-worthy skincare item I own. I was naturally drawn to the mesmerizing periwinkle coloring but was initially turned off by the high price tag. I'm happy I took the plunge though; this has become an ultimate staple in my routine. You see, facial oils and other moisturizers come and go, but this night treatment has become a savior for my sensitive skin. For the last few weeks I've been experiencing some weird ass breakouts and this is the only moisturizer/treatment I can wear that helps eliminate my sandpaper texture but also doesn't irritate my angry skin.
While other night treatments and peels use synthetic chemical exfoliants to resurface the skin, this product uses the power of fruit enzymes to naturally exfoliate. The blend of fruits included in this balm infuse the skin with powerful anti-oxidants and the plant-derived hyaluronic acid deeply hydrates the skin. I use a pea sized amount of this product nightly, and if I know ahead of time that I won't be wearing makeup I'll also wear it during the day.
I would like to address one criticism I've read other reviewers. They mention that while they are rubbing the product into the skin it has a tendency to pill off the face. I have applied this many ways, onto dry freshly washed skin, onto skin I probably should have washed, to skin that has been spritzed with toner, on top of a facial oil (you get the point) and I have never had that issue. I'm unsure of why others have had this issue, all I can say is that for my skin the texture is delightful and it makes my skin feel perfectly hydrated and plumped.
